I did this photo shoot the week before Thanksgiving in downtown Spokane, Washington—my new locale. My wife and I moved here recently, and although we miss all the great friends we made back in Utah we’re having fun settling into a new place. We’ve met some awesome people through my business, my wife’s school, and our church, and have even gotten to connect with some family we’d never met before.
Eric is someone I was able to connect with here in Spokane. We did a product shoot together a while ago. He was really pleased with the images and asked if I would be willing to do some family photos for him. Of course I was happy to do it! I love being behind the camera and am always ready to look at the world through the lens.
Eric and Kieran are such a cool couple, and their daughter Zoey is adorable. She was so excited to have her picture taken. Absolutely loved the camera and kept wanting more! You never know how kids are going to be during a photo shoot, but this was right up Zoey’s alley.
We combined two different types of sessions to create this shoot: a family session and a couples session. They both went great. Keiran has a great sense of style and the whole family was dressed so nicely.
I started off the shoot by buying everybody a coffee or beverage of their choice at Indaba, one of the coffee shops downtown. It’s a great little spot, with a very relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. As a small business owner myself, I like to support local businesses whenever I can. The store owners were super accommodating when I asked if we could take a few photos, so we were able to get several shots in the coffee shop as well as pictures outside.
To finish up, I thought it would be neat to create a smoky background for the final shots, so we went into an alley and used a smoke bomb to get the look we were going for. We did get some great photos, but within seconds the whole alley was filled with black smoke and it had started pouring out into the street too. Another minute or so and the cops showed up thinking there was a fire! Oops. They were super kind about it all as we explained what we were doing, and I really appreciated them not arresting me for arson. As a photographer I know some of the stuff I do looks a little weird to other people. I’m always grateful when they’re willing to just shake their heads and chalk it up to me being one of those crazy artistic types!
All in all, a fantastic shoot with a fantastic family. I’m really happy with the way these shots turned out, and it was fun to explore downtown Spokane with my camera and some great company.
